Someone gave me a Sony DCR-PC101. He said it was broken and didn't want to spend any money. When I turned it on, I inserted a tape and then I received Error code C:31:23 (S reel fault).
In the past another person gave me a camera like this with the same error code. In the past I looked at the mechanism deck and the pinch roller was missing.
This camera the pinch roller was there. I first tested the pinch roller and it came off easily. The small plastic stopper at the end of the pincher roller was missing. This plastic stopper prevents the pinch roller from falling off. In this situation the pinch roller was on the axel, but with a missing plastic stopper, the pinch roller will slide up and down.
Second I decided to create a new plstic stopper. I opened a pen and cut the tip of the clear tube. I tested it, but the diameter of the tube was too big.
Next I found a cheaper pen and took it apart. The white tube inside was smaller in diameter. I cut off a piece of white tube, replaced the pinch roller, placed the pinch roller on the axel and the pressed the white tube over the axel as a stopper. It worked.
Third, I inserted the tape and received the same error. I hit the reset button and held the FF (fast forward) and the camera fast forwarded the tape for a few minutes. Then I stopped the tape and hit the rewind and rewound the tape to the beginning.
After that, the error was gone. I cleaned the tape path. I took the tape in and out many times. Did test recordings and playbacks. There is no more error.
It works now.
